Renville County Police Blotter Records

The Renville County Police Blotter covers law enforcement activity across nearly 1,000 square miles of south-central Minnesota, all maintained by the Renville County Sheriff's Office under Sheriff Scott Hable in Olivia. The office records incidents and arrests in a shared records system used by all county law enforcement departments. Public data from this system is available under Minn. Stat. § 13.82, which requires agencies to release basic arrest and incident information to anyone who asks.

Requests for police blotter records, incident reports, or arrest data should be submitted to the Records Division. You can come in person or send a written request by mail. The office cannot accept credit or debit card payments. Bring cash in the exact amount, or pay by check or money order made out to the Renville County Sheriff's Office. If you come in person, note that staff may not be able to make change, so exact cash is important.

How to Submit a Records Request

To request a report, gather as much detail as you can before you call or write. Helpful information includes the report number (if you have it), the date and time of the incident, the location, and the names of people involved. The more specific you are, the faster the office can locate the record.

Under Minn. Stat. § 13.82, agencies must make certain data public. This includes the time and place of the incident, the type of call, the name of any person arrested, and the charges filed. Some data may be restricted, including information tied to ongoing investigations, juvenile records, and victim identities in specific case types. If part of your request is denied, the office must identify the statute that justifies withholding that data.

You do not need to explain why you want a record. Minnesota's Government Data Practices Act at Minn. Stat. § 13.03 gives the public the right to access government data without justifying the request. This applies to Renville County records just as it does to every other county in the state.

Shared Records System

Renville County is notable in that its records software is shared across all county law enforcement departments. This means records from city police in Olivia, Hector, Bird Island, and other communities in the county may flow through the same system as Sheriff's records. This integration can make it easier to track a case that spans multiple jurisdictions within the county. Still, for incidents handled by a city police department, it is worth confirming with the relevant agency whether they manage their own records or route requests through the Sheriff's Office.

Patrol and Investigations

The Renville County Sheriff's Office has dedicated patrol and investigations divisions. The Patrol Division covers the county's rural roads and responds to accidents, welfare checks, property crimes, and other calls. The screenshot below shows the Patrol Division page.

The Investigations Division handles more complex cases, including felony crimes, fraud, and drug offenses. Renville County participates in the BLRR Drug Task Force, a multi-county narcotics enforcement unit. Task force investigations may involve multiple agencies and can result in records held by more than one office. The screenshot below shows the Investigations Division page.

If a case involves the BLRR Task Force, some records may be held at the task force level rather than by the Renville County Sheriff. Contact the office for guidance on where to direct your request.

Anonymous Tips and Crime Stoppers

Renville County participates in Crime Stoppers, a program that allows residents to report criminal activity without identifying themselves. The toll-free tip line is (320) 523-3790. Tips can lead to investigations and arrests that show up in the Police Blotter. Crime Stoppers tips are kept separate from standard public records, and tipster identities are protected even from law enforcement in most cases.

State Resources

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) maintains statewide criminal history records. For background checks that cover multiple counties or a long time span, the BCA is the right resource. The Minnesota Courts website at mncourts.gov provides public access to case records. If an arrest in Renville County led to charges, you may find case details, hearing dates, and dispositions in the court search tool.
